Geography of Rome:
Mental Map!

A Mental Map is a map that you take notes on so that you can learn about a time and place in the world.

Everyone in your tribe should have their work shown on this map!
It looks like this:

Here are the 7 things that belong on any map that would be good enough to invade Rome:

1. Provinces

Rome is an Empire - which means it controls many different lands, even if those areas are filled with people that don't feel Roman at all.

Many of them fought back against Rome when they were taken over by the Empire.

2. Cities

Cities are important for protection and trade.

Rome got rich from controlling cities - which controlled trade. All of these cities exist within the Roman Empire.

Locations are approximate! Roman map-making isn't perfect :)

3. Bodies of Water

Water like oceans, seas, and rivers allow Rome to transport trade goods from one place to another, allowing them to get very rich.

The romans called the Meditteranean Sea "Mare Nostrum". That means "Our Sea" in Latin.

4. Resources

Rome got rich from trading resources it took from lands taken through war.

They traded these items for things they didn't have like silk along the Silk Road all the way to Han China!

5. The Lands of the Barbarian Tribes

The Gauls, the Visigoths, the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths were not always happy with the way Rome decided to rule their lands.

Often Rome refused to grant these people citizenship (with full rights) even though they still made them pay taxes.

The Barbaraian Tribes often fought with Rome, even taking the city of Rome several times.

Put a CROSSED SWORDS symbol about where the middle of your tribe's name is. Then label it with the name of your tribe.

6. The Beginning of the Roman Republic

Rome was much smaller in the beginning, before they became an empire.

Here's where it all started! The Roman Republlic.

Make it's outline YELLOW.

7. Boundaries of the Roman Empire

The Empire stretched all the way around the Mediterranean Sea. OUTLINE it in Red, and lightly shade the Empire in red pencil.

Notice how the empire is engulfing the whole world :(
